Firebird 2.5 has known security vulnerabilities. The Firebird project stopped maintaining this version in 2019 and provides no fixes. After the migration, uninstall Firebird 2.5 from every computer that has it.
The GTR Firebird setup leaves Firebird 2.5 in place, because the migration can still use it.
Before you start
Check these points on each computer:
- All databases on this computer are migrated to Firebird 5. After the uninstall, Vacuum Firebird 2.5 Database no longer works on this computer.
- The database configuration of each GTR program points to Firebird 5. See Migrating the database configuration.
- The GTR programs work with the migrated databases.
Uninstall Firebird 2.5 on Windows
- Close all programs that use Firebird 2.5.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the entry that starts with
Firebird 2.5and click Uninstall. - Check in Services (
services.msc) that no Firebird 2.5 service is left, for exampleFirebird Server - DefaultInstanceorFirebird Guardian - DefaultInstance.
Do not uninstall Firebird 5.0 Database Server, and do not stop the service Firebird Server - GTR_Firebird_50_Instance.
Remove the firewall rule
- Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security (
wf.msc). - Select Inbound Rules.
- Delete each rule that opens the Firebird 2.5 port. The default port is 3050.
Keep the rule Firebird 5.0 DB Server for port 3055. See Network port.
Delete the old databases
Delete the old databases in Firebird 2.5 format once the migrated database works without errors:
- the safety copy
<database>_origafter a migration on this computer or on a network share - the source database after a migration in the TCP/IP mode
Keep a backup according to your own backup rules. Firebird 5 cannot open these files.
Firebird 2.5 embedded package
The file firebird25_embed.zip in C:\ProgramData\GTR mbH\Firebird-Management starts no service and opens no network port. The tool needs it only for a migration without a Firebird 2.5 server. You can delete the file if you plan no further migration.
If you need the file again, run the GTR Firebird setup. It installs the file.
Firebird 2.5 on Linux
Stop the Firebird 2.5 service and remove the installation with the method that was used to install it. Then close the Firebird 2.5 port in the firewall of the server and delete the old databases.
